Government has been warned by leading bookies in the UK that any attempted increase in taxes or regulation at the Budget will lead to job losses and betting shop closures, as well as further undermine their ability to compete with offshore rivals

Bookies emphasised that the industry directly employed 40,000 people and supported a further 60,000 jobs in racing and other industries that are dependent on betting.

Any regressive move from the Government, the bookies said, could force them to relocate parts of their business offshore. These warnings were given at meetings with Gerry Sutcliffe, Minister for Sport and Angela Eagle, Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury.

Last week, the bookmakers told Mr Sutcliffe what was at risk from any such actions, amid fears that the government could raise gross profits tax from 15pc to 17pc, as well as introduce stringent regulations on fixed-odds betting terminals.
