There are many people around the world play this game. Beautiful cards, complex algorithms, unlimited strategies and game play, expansion sets, online platform and more have made this classic trading card game a legend. Every year, top players and enthusiasts gather to do a world championships tournament. The last man standing on the battlefield will be announced as the World Champion of Magic The Gathering of the year.

The 2009 Magic The Gathering World Championships has ended in glory. People from all over the world came the arena to fight for the crazy title of the best Magic player in the world. This year the a mysterious team from China won the World Team Championship. The team members are Bo Li, Wu Tong and Zhiyang Zhang. The champion goes to Andre Coimbra. We have done some statistics to look into how these guys beat all other opponents and get the honor. And we can learn something from the stats and make it our advantages.

During the four days tournament, players have to participate in hundreds of games in various formats. In fact, they have to train up for at least three different kinds in order to survive all the battles. Just the endurance it requires is spectacular enough to be given standing ovations. I personally would not have entered the game for some applause. Well, I guess the winners do get some kinds of material rewards.

In the standard playing on the first day of the competition, we found that there was a deck used so frequently that it has noticeable by naked eyes. It was the Jund deck. More than 700 matches were fought with the Jund deck. And in that amount of matches with Jund deck, they managed to win more than 5 matches out of every 10! On numbers, the deck with highest probability of victory is the Turbo-Fog Deck. But the sample size was far too small to call this the best deck because only 2 players used it in around 20 matches.

Overall, we considered the Green-White Aggro the best deck according to the winning percentage and the number of match that it won. It won 48 matches and had the winning percentage of over 57%. However, this may not be absolute because there were far too many players using the Jund deck.

Magic The Gathering is a fun game to play. But you decide whether you would like to spend the time and effort to make yourself so good at it that you can compete for the world championship.
